In a recently-filed lawsuit, it was alleged that major flooring producers Lumber Liquidators. The lawsuit charges that Lumber Liquidators does not currently follow proper industry standards and utilizes toxic amounts of formaldehyde in their hardwood floors.
The husband and wife plaintiffs that brought the suit say that Lumber Liquidators did not respond to their concerns regarding the amount of formaldehyde in their product. The couple tested their home themselves and found levels of formaldehyde that were well over the toxic exposure levels. Lumber Liquidators reportedly still refused to acknowledge the infraction and are currently now involved in litigation.
Toxic Chemicals in Flooring Materials
In the lawsuit, it mentions that Lumber Liquidators falsified qualification for health and safety standards and claimed that their product was certified as approved. The plaintiffs in the case independently tested formaldehyde levels in their home and discovered that there were higher levels than considered safe in terms of chronic exposure.
In fact, the formaldehyde concentration was almost twenty times higher than recommended safety levels. Formaldehyde is a recognized carcinogen meaning that it is known to cause cancer. In the past, formaldehyde has been used as part of the glue in hardwood flooring, especially in places like China where health and safety standards are markedly lower. This formaldehyde can diffuse into the air from the glue potentially exposing the residents to dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals.
